Terrarium

Last weekend, Pete made a few mini terrariums. He's been wanting to do this since we started thinking of gift ideas for the 30 before 30 project. I see a new hobby in his future, and possibly a christmas terrarium gift in yours!

Time is on my side

Literally...
Every morning, without fail, Pete groans "what time is it...?", but waits until I'm on the other side of the room, or in the bathroom, to ask. If he had his own clock on his side of the bed, I wouldn't have to trip over dirty clothes and the ironing board, in the pitch black, to check my phone (our only working clocks in the house are phones and cable boxes...so sad). But I do. Because I luuurve him...


SO today I'm on the hunt for a super cool little bedside clock for Prince Pete, who, btw, gets to sleep a whopping 30 minutes later than I. Yep, I'm jealous. These beauties from ClockWorkUniverse will definitely do the trick!

Weekend Stuffs

This weekend was quite a roller coaster ride for the Tiger Attack Twins. Friday was spent relaxing at home, as Pete had to work earrrly Saturday. Toward the end of his workday, he got some bad news that turned out to be fake bad news, after which we cancelled respective plans and spent the better half of Saturday Night trying to get our heads straight again (apologies to those who had to mingle with two very rattled people).

We made it up to ourselves, and each other, by having the most wonderful, mellow Sunday we've had in a while...which also turned out to be the most productive! Strange, we know. We ran the Lyon Street Steps, had brekkie at our neighborhood spot, went grocery shopping, took funny pictures, visited our friends' sweet new place, then filled our house with (what we named) the best albums of 2009 while we hung curtains, cleaned & made pom-poms...ALL before the rain started. Phew!!!

As excited as we are about all the upcoming holiday events, we are most excited for the 5-day rain forecast & lots of hibernation time! Expect lots of good stuff in the next coupla' weeks!

Window Treatment

With Pete's family coming to San Francisco for the Christmas Holiday, it's time to get a move on sprucing up Tiger Attack Twins HQ. Don't get us wrong -- we think the place looks lovely as-is. It just needs a splash of paint & a few accent pieces (namely additional seating) so that our little house can feel more like a home for as long as we rent it. We're excited to get the decorating started & can't wait to share some of our fun projects & finds with our faithful reader(s) along the way.

We haven't had any disagreements (well, that is since the Great Pete Purge of 2009) about our aesthetic; it's actually been quite fun to merge our possessions. Pete has a fantastic collection of vintage items -- typewriters, luggage, cameras & records, to name a few -- & Esme came with all the necessary "basics". Because it's a rental & our landlord is...less than amenable, we are stuck with certain things: Our light fixtures are HID-E-OUS (and that's being kind), the laminate in the kitchen is...well, laminate, & we're definitely working with less space than either of us is used to. But the bones of our apartment are great; There's lots of natural light, & plenty of nooks & crannies for chairs & storage. We also agree on bold colors and patterns like these 2 chairs Esme's coveting almost as much as the Eames Rocker (hint hint, Santa Claus).

Alas, Anthropologie will have to wait. As a result of a very persistent cold in our home, CURTAINS were moved to first on the agenda!

Pete's been perpetually sick for weeks now, & after much trial & much more error, we've realized that it's got to have something to do with the crazy draft in our bedroom. We had nothing covering the windows but your standard crappy mini blinds, & no rugs in the window bay. We were going to paint first & pick window clothes to match the color. But when cold comes to shove, there's nothing like a little window TLC to get The Boy back on the mend! 

The curtains have increased the temperature and cuteness in our bedroom by at least 10 degrees, & Pete didn't cough ONCE last night. AMAZING! We both wanna hear less coughing & see more of this:

She's a Crafty One!

For the past few months, Esme's crafty side has been dormant. With the move & subsequent adjustments involved therein, it's definitely taken a back seat. BUT this past weekend, it decided to come out of hibernation in a really fun way.

Firstly, big Thanks to Jonah & Staci for getting engaged & wanting an engagement party! The soiree gave me a great excuse to not only eat 5 cupcakes, but also hone my party-planning instinct & make decorations!
The letters were all hand-painted with a worn look on silver card stock, pasted on various pretty papers (from Paper Source) & hand-threaded with ribbon.
It turned out pretty well, no?
Now, on to Halloween. I've had this Picnic & Ant tandem costume idea in mind for years now & finally got around to doing something about it! It was sooo much fun to make & wear...although, not a lot of people understood what we were -- they thought I was a donut lady & Pete a burglar. You be the judge!

By the end of the night, I had lost 30% of my fake foodz & Pete's thorax had to be reattached with a belt.

Okay...so maybe my crafting needs a little help, but I'm so glad it's come out of its shell again. There's nothing like a little spurt of creativity to add some much-needed variety to the routine!

Recycled Shelf Liners

We have a ton of built-in cabinets in our new place, which means we were left with a ton of ugly, stained shelf liners. I don't know about you, but there's something really yucky about using other peoples' drawer & shelf liners...who knows how they cared for them, or how long they may have been there to begin with. Changing them is always one of the first things I do when I move in.

When sorting through Pete's stuff (there's really no other way to categorize it), we came up with the idea to reuse things that had previously just been taking up space. For example -- Pete had a big plastic bag of old maps from his travels to Europe & drive across the US. Little did he know at the time, his packrat tendencies would come in handy 5 years later.
Case in point: "What are we going to do with all these maps???". Operation Re-line the Shelves, Commence *clap clap*!!

It super easy -- All you need is a few maps, some rubber cement & spray adhesive, scissors and a free evening! The result is colorful, durable & definitely different from the run-of-the-mill (& environmentally unfriendly) shelf liners from Target.

This is definitely my favorite home improvement project so far. With all Pete's stuff that can be repurposed, there's surely more to come!

P+E's Wishlist (or Yr Face is an Eames Rocker: Origins)

Greetings & happy Friday, all! We hope your week has been productive & happy. P+E are in a good mood. It's not bright & sunny this morning in San Francisco (quite the contrary, the cold grey wall of fog is out in full force), so we thought we'd bring you something colorful.

Like any self respecting American couple, there are Things we want for our home. Today, we'll highlight one of those Things, which also happens to be the source of the title of this blog. If you've got a lot of money & you're not sure how you can possibly spend it to buy us a present (you KNOW you've got this problem!), consider this an open invitation. It would make Esme's day for sure. Firstly, please inspect this picture:
That right there is an Eames rocker. Charles and Ray Eames were furniture designers mid-last century, & Esme has been coveting this chair for our apartment for some time. She's even printed out a picture of it & put it on the fridge. We've got monthly bills & expenses to pay, so right now it's just a picture on the fridge. But one day, this chair will be ours.

So, that explains the Eames rocker part. But what's up with Yr Face? (That's what he said). Well, Pete does this thing where he takes a phrase that someone just said & throws "YR FACE" in front of it, saying it back at them like an insult. It's basically just like a "your mom" joke but more third grade than fifth grade. That said, when Esme first told Pete that she really wanted the above chair, his response was...you guessed it, the title of our blog.

Really, we're grown ups, we promise. Here's a picture of an entire rainbow of Eames rockers. Try not to "oooh" & "ahhh" at them.

Esme likes the red one. Pete doesn't really care which color (but if he had his pick, we have a hunch it'd be mint green).

Suds & Scrabble

Last night was the third installment in what has become a bit of a tradition with us. We grab all our dirty clothes, shove them in the car & drive a few blocks over to Get The Funk Out, a neighborhood laundrymat that has come to embody a lot about what this makes this ‘hood special to us. There are bands that practice underneath, so you’ll usually be treated to muted punk or jam rock of some kind sneaking up the stairs & under the basement doorway. Also, there just happens to be a livingroomesque seating area by the door with a big table.

That’s where we usually set up. Here are directions to the perfect laundry date.

1. They unload all the laundry & bring it inside.

2. She separates everything out & starts the washes.

2a. Meanwhile, he’s parking the car & running down the block to pick up burritos & beers.

3. He arrives right as she’s sitting down. They devour their dinner.

4. It’s time to break out the scrabble! This usually involves a lot more strategy than your average match-up (for example, she will try to convince him that words in Spanish should count, & she will roll her eyes when he drops any two letter Q word).

5. In the midst of all this, we must be sure that clothes are going into the dryer in a timely fashion.

6. Scrabble & drying should be coming to a wrap at around the same time. Now it’s time to finish that beer while folding everything.

7. Head home & collapse. You can put it all away in the morning.

Give this a shot next time. If it doesn’t go over well, we’ll give you your laundry night back.
